Definition Panel - Meeting
The National Accessible Reading Assessment Projects (NARAP) held the first meeting of its Definition Panel at the Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport Hilton on Saturday, January 29, 2005. The Panel reviewed five major reports on reading and drafted language based on those reports that will serve as the beginning point for a definition of reading proficiency. Panel members agreed that in general the definition should be streamlined, robust, and accompanied by substantial explanation.

Focus Groups
NARAP will be holding focus groups on the draft definition at meetings and conferences throughout the spring and summer. The tentative schedule for the focus groups is:
Council for Exceptional Children, April 6
American Educational Research Association/National Council on Measurement in Education, April 13
International Reading Association, May 1
Council of Chief State School Officers, June 19
Society for the Scientific Study of Reading, June 24
NARAP staff will be contacting General Advisory Committee (GAC) members associated with the organizations listed above for assistance with the logistics of holding a focus group session at their conference. Additional sites and opportunities for focus group sessions are also being discussed and GAC members associated with those sites and opportunities will be contacted. Once the focus group schedule is finalized, it will be sent to the GAC. Members in attendance at those conferences are invited to sit in on and observe the focus group process.
