Background Overview

In October, 2004, the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) funded projects to conduct systematic programs of research and development to make large-scale assessments of reading proficiency more accessible for students who have disabilities that affect reading. These are five-year projects.

The projects are meeting a common set of goals and following a time frame for activities that were set out in the original request for proposals (CFDA 84.324F). The application package for the proposals contains Additional Background and Reference Information that helps clarify the issues and challenges that drive the need for accessible reading assessments.
